Syphillis

Syphilis is sexually transmitted infection caused by an organism called Treponema pallidum.

Symptoms of Syphilis

There are three stages to syphilis, and the symptoms depend on the stage of infection.

  • Small, painless ulcer (chancre) in the area of infection; usually in the genital area, but will occur wherever the sire of initial infection occurred
  • Rash all over the body, including palms and soles
  • Small patches of hair loss in the scalp and eyebrows
  • Small, wart-like bumps in the genital or anal area
  • Heart and nervous system complications

Microscopic evaluation of fluid from the chancre, looking to identify the organism,
can be done. Blood work checking for antibodies against the syphilis organism is
another method of diagnosis

An infected person needs to be treated with penicillin. In addition, All contacts
need to be identified and treated.

Using condoms every time you have sex, will cut down on the chances of catching syphilis.
